While some Americans have cut back on cable, expensive clothes and other non-essentials during these economically challenging times, there are a few items some households are refusing to do without.
Topping the list of items Americans must have is a favorite since the days of Ford - the automobile. According to a recent Pew Research Center study , 88 percent of those polled said their vehicles are essential possessions. The response mirrors a 1973 study by the Roper Organization when 90 percent of those polled gave the same answer.
Texans seem to share this view. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2005-2007 American Community Survey, 41 percent if Texas households had two or more cars, while another 18 percent had three or more vehicles.
The Pew study showed that Americans also can't do without their cell phones, home computers and high-speed Internet access. The study, conducted April 3-8, polled 1,000 adults.
