I-69/TTC Public Hearings Begin

The Texas Department of Transportation will hold 47 public hearings to provide citizens an opportunity to comment on the I-69/TTC draft environmental impact statement (DEIS).

The study area for I-69/TTC was recently narrowed, and TxDOT officials want to hear from Texans about these recommendations. At the hearings, TxDOT staff will be available to answer project questions during an open house from 5-6:30 p.m. A formal presentation about the environmental study begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by comments from the public.

In addition to providing comments (both written and oral) at the public hearings, interested residents can be a part of the decision-making process by submitting comments online at www.keeptexasmoving.com or mailing them to I-69/TTC, P.O. Box 14428, Austin, TX 78761. All comments must be received by March 19, 2008 to be included on the official record.

As a result of public comment to date, the report recommends continued environmental studies on I-69/TTC focused on using existing highways first with new corridors as a secondary option.

“We are doing what the public asked us to do and that is look at existing highways first,” said Amadeo Saenz, TxDOT executive director. “If improvements to existing highways and infrastructure cannot be made to handle long range transportation needs — or if citizens and local officials tell us they prefer a new corridor — other options will be considered. Decisions will be made based on public input and detailed studies of environmental and social impacts.”
